Primary
What it measures
Up to the third grade the child learns to read, and after that they read to learn. A child who does not build a relationship with reading in these years pays the price in every later subject, not in language alone.
How to read the result
Array
Before administering
Say to the child: "Questions about reading, and not about how many books you have read. Answer with what you actually feel."
Its limits
A self-report about feeling and habit, not about skill. And it does not reveal a reading difficulty — a child showing signs of difficulty in sounding out letters or in fluency belongs in an assessment carried out by a specialist, not in this questionnaire.
Its dimensions
- Enjoying ReadingWhen high: Finds pleasure in reading and asks for it.
- Choosing BooksWhen high: Chooses their own book and knows what they like.
- Talking About ReadingWhen high: Recounts what they have read, asks questions and pictures the events.
