What it measures
What changes most with your intervention at this age is not the child's ability but their belief about their ability. The child who believes that working hard makes them better takes on the hard task, and the child who believes the opposite withdraws before they begin.
How to read the result
Array
Before administering
Do not tell the child that this is a test about "intelligence" or about being "clever". Say: "Questions about how you feel when the lesson is hard for you."
Its limits
A self-report by a child, and it is affected by their wish to give the "right" answer. Read it together with what you yourself observe in genuinely hard situations.
Its dimensions
- Effort Makes a DifferenceWhen high: They believe that practice makes them better.
- Mistakes Teach MeWhen high: They accept a mistake and ask about what they did not understand.
- I Try AgainWhen high: They finish a hard task and try another way.
